Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.
Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the "SMS of Internet," in that the site provides the functionality (via its application programming interfaces) for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself. According to Neilsen Wire (http://twitter.com/nielsenwire), Twitter is the fastest growing social community of this generation. It experienced 1,382% growth from February 2008 to February 2009, leaving Facebook in the dust at #4 on the list of top social marketing platforms and is largely comprised of adults ages 34 to 49 using it for business. I personally use it for both and love testing new Twitter tools that make use, marketing and growth so much easier. Twitter also makes marketing more fun! It is highly effective once you learn how to use.
The following is an awesome video called how to use Twitter as a Twool.
It explains how to use Twitter for Marketing, Press Releases, Feedback, Announcements. Also, clarifies that Twitter is not a an online toy for teens nor a stiff neck application.
I do like the last message about "Twitter Spam".
If they opt-in to following you then how can it be spam? I have heard gurus like Mike Dillard complaining about "Twitter Spam", but the fact of the matter is that if I wanted to have an ongoing conversation with someone, I would not use Twitter ... I would use Skype. Another factor is that the gurus hire someone to tweet for them and use their personal Twitters for friends, not many they are complaining about make it to the friend Twitter. Plus, I bet their friend Twitters are full of spam links from friends "sharing" cool resources. LOL!
I use my Twitter to market to others, post interesting information and check out what others have to share. An advertisement or two may be a part of that at any given time; especially if it is a service that pays me to Tweet.
Twitter Tools
Another great thing about using Twitter is that there are so many Twitter Tools and resources to use. Of course, my favorite are the one that help you make money with Twitter :)
